🌿 Peanut Mint Chutney (Perfect with Idli & Dosa)

This Peanut Mint Chutney is a delicious combination of roasted peanuts, fresh mint, and coriander that creates a rich, nutty, and refreshing flavor. The roasted spices and creamy coconut give the chutney a wonderful texture, while a simple tempering adds authentic South Indian taste.

It pairs perfectly with soft idlis and crispy dosas and can be prepared quickly with simple ingredients. This chutney is both flavorful and satisfying — a great alternative to regular coconut chutney.

🥜 Ingredients

For the Chutney

  • Peanuts – ½ cup

  • Pottukadalai (Roasted Bengal gram) – ¼ cup

  • Fresh mint leaves – a handful

  • Fresh coriander – ½ cup (chopped)

  • Green chilies – 1–2

  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

  • Ginger – 1-inch piece

  • Garlic – 1 clove (optional)

  • Tamarind – small blueberry-sized piece

  • Fresh grated coconut – 2 tbsp

  • Salt – to taste

  • Oil – 1–2 tsp

For Seasoning

  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

  • Urad dal – ½ tsp

  • Curry leaves – few

  • Dry red chili – 1

  • Hing (asafoetida) – a pinch

  • Oil – 1 tsp

🍳 Method

Step 1 – Prepare the Chutney

  1. Heat a pan and add 1–2 teaspoons oil.

  2. Add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds.

  3. Add peanuts and roast until aromatic.

  4. Add green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Sauté briefly.

  5. Add mint leaves and sauté until slightly wilted.

  6. Add chopped coriander, roasted Bengal gram, salt, and tamarind. Mix well.

  7. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool slightly.

  8. Add grated coconut.

  9. Grind everything into a smooth chutney, adding a little water if needed.

Step 2 – Prepare the Seasoning

  1. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a small pan.

  2. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

  3. Add urad dal and sauté until lightly golden.

  4. Add hing, curry leaves, and dry red chili.

  5. Switch off the heat once the mustard finishes popping.

Step 3 – Serve

Pour the seasoning over the chutney and mix well.

Serve fresh with Idli or Dosa.
