Roadside Chutney | Street-Style Onion Tomato Mint Chutney
Craving the delicious chutney served at roadside dosa stalls? This easy-to-make Roadside-Style Chutney brings that familiar street-food flavor right into your kitchen! Made with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green herbs, and red chillies, this chutney has a wonderful balance of tanginess, mild spice, and freshness.
The combination of mint and coriander adds a lovely aroma, while sautéed onions and tomatoes give it a delicious flavor. The secret to getting that authentic roadside-style taste is to keep the chutney slightly coarse rather than grinding it into a smooth paste.
Serve it with hot idli, crispy dosa, or soft uttappam for a delicious breakfast or dinner!
Ingredients
medium onions-2 chopped
tomatoes-1½ chopped
ginger -1-inch piece
garlic cloves -2
dried red chillies (adjust to taste)-1–2
coriander leaves (or curry leaves)-A small handful
fresh mint leaves-1 handful
Salt to taste
oil -2–3 teaspoons
Preparation Method
Heat the oil: Heat 2–3 teaspoons of oil in a pan over medium heat.
Sauté the onions: Add the chopped onions and sauté for about a minute.
Add aromatics: Add the ginger, garlic, and dried red chillies. Continue sautéing until the onions are about ½ to ¾ cooked and turn slightly translucent.
Add tomatoes: Add the chopped tomatoes and salt. Sauté for a few minutes until the tomatoes soften and become slightly mushy.
Add fresh herbs: Add the coriander leaves (or curry leaves) and mint leaves. Sauté for another minute until the herbs release their aroma.
Cool and grind: Switch off the heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Transfer it to a blender and grind to a slightly coarse consistency. Avoid grinding it into a very smooth paste.
Adjust consistency: The chutney is ready to serve! If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a little water and mix well.
